Anybody who was reading between the lines of the book knew she was referring to James Stewart as Marlene's "Jimmy" (although Marlene had many "Jimmys") and that it was Stewart who was the father of the baby that Marlene had an abortion. Earlier in the book, Maria mentions that Dietrich's fool-proof Ice Water and Vinegar Douche failed once - and Marlene blamed her 'costar' at the time and not her questionable practice of douching for that (meaning she got pregnant). Later in the book, when Maria talks about finding her mother resting after having her abortion, it was exactly after filming of Destry. So, Stewart was the father. Maria mentions in the book that she had to protect many names of Dietrich's lovers because some were still alive (like Doug Fairbanks Jr. and Palm Beach millionaire Pat Patrovich) and, in some instances of the deceased, wives - and husbands - and children of the lovers refused to let her. You've got to read between the lines of Riva's amazing book. If you do, you'd realize she reveals that matriarch Rose Kennedy wanted to go to bed with Dietrich!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
