LIKE A LOT OF PRESIDENT BUSH'S CRITICS,

Jonathan Alter says, "I supported the Iraq war at first. Because of the evidence on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction laid out by Colin Powell, I agreed that we needed to disarm Saddam Hussein. I even think it's possible that 25 years from now, historians will conclude that the Iraq war helped accelerate the modernizing of the Middle East, even if it doesn't fully democratize it. But if that happens, Bush might not get as much credit as he hopes, and not just because most historians, as Richard Nixon liked to say, are liberals. Bush may look bad because his leadership on Iraq has been a fiasco. He didn't plan for it: the early decisions that allowed the insurgency to get going were breathtakingly incompetent. He didn't pay for it: Bush is the first president in history to cut taxes during a war, this one now costing nearly 1 billion [dollars] a week. And most important of all, he didn't tell the American people the truth about it: taking a nation to war is the most solemn duty of a president, and he'd better make certain there's no alternative and no doubt about the evidence." —Jonathan Alter (NEWSWEEK columnist in July 25, 2005 issue)

GEORGE CLOONEY AND EDWARD R. MURROW

Have you heard about the new movie George Clooney directed and is soon releasing, based on the Edward R. Murrow/ Senator McCarthy dust up in the Fifties? In black and white, it's supposed to be a gem of a film true to the times and the conflict between news people and McCarthyism. Clooney's dad was a television newsman whose idol was Murrow. Clooney himself is a self-proclaimed "actorvist", and a liberal one to boot.

He is reported to have said in a NEWSWEEK article that it infuriates him that it's become a dirty word [the word 'liberal']. "It blows my mind," he says, "because [unlike conservatives] we don't have to put the word compassionate in front of it to say we actually give a shit about people. I'm going to keep saying 'liberal' as loud as I can and as often as I can."

Clooney goes on to say that this administration certainly reminds one of those long ago days. "There is no end of McCarthy. It's been a tough time for journalists—if you ask a tough question of this administration, on a rare occasion when they have a press conference, you're put in the back of the room, or you're Maureen Dowd and you get your credentials pulled. To question anything about them is meant to be unpatriotic."

Bill "O'Really?" [can't spell his last name for some reason] has already attacked Clooney for his liberalism, threatening to end his career if he continues to speak out about the war and liberalism. Talk about a nascent McCarthyite, O'Really is certainly one of those.

Gee: Why would anyone hate Bush? That is soooo personal. But then, so is ranting and raving for 8 years and trying to find ANY dirt to discredit ANY president. It is always the nature of those who believe themselves to be the victors, to try to appear concilliatory and magnanomous. First it was the Democrats telling us to be high minded and 'overlook' forgive the blatant and weak indiscretions of the Democratic President.....Now it is the Republicans, who feel others should just let it go...and accept the new Reich um I mean reign of the Conservative Party. Well, it should be noted that while Clinton could not keep his pants zipped he did manage to spread the largesse and leave us with hundred of billions in surplus money. Bush it is said---failed at every business he ever ran and what do we give this loser? Why the keys to this country and all of our well being. So now let's see: We are fighting a war in another country and killing thousands if not hundreds of thousands of another countries citizens (even though the terrorists of 9/11 were Arabic). We are giving contracts to Halliburton and other corporate pigs without even making them bid for the job. Cheney allows the energy commission to sodomize California and other states, We lie about why we go to war and torture and rape our way into the annals of war crimes.... we spend money--have a trillion dollar deficit, and wait: perhaps the richest thing of all---we watch an entire party use lies, venom and hatred to divide this country in every way possible and keep their party members loyal by allowing them a legitimate political platform for their racism and hatred. I used to read the book of revelations and wonder how the events described there could ever come to past. I wonder no more. I wondered how Germany could be led down such a destructive path in World War II---I wonder no more. I wondered how the Roman Empire could 'crash and burn' so decisively in such a small historical amount of time: I wonder no more.

The president just went before Congress to propose a plan that would allow ' martial law and the use of the military to be imposed at will' So I guess I can stop wondering about how countries allow dictators to come to power. Now my most fearful and yet to be fulfilled worry: How ever shall the 'Church' be deceived and tricked into bringing the Antichrist to Power? (Maybe he will pretend he supports their causes and is born again while calling people a**holes off camera, after all they will overlook that small telltale sign) Maybe he'll propose special id numbers to help stop identity theft and to have a better handle on DNA info--say, put it in a micro chip and implant it under every one's skin (in the forehead, or the right hand perhaps?) Maybe he will talk about peace and freedom while torturing people, removing rights and trying to implement a one party/one judiciary/ one dictatorship dynastic rule.....The only thing really offered out to the middle class is that if they tow that Party line of back stabbing, smearing, lying and viciousness--then they too will have a place at the table. Look around you everyone: The US is quickly becoming a very ugly place. We don't care what happens to the poor, or other races or other religions but 1 question: Would you want any of the things we have been doing to the democrats, the Iraquis, etc to happen to you personally? Who could come to America and bomb us and kill our President's children and gloat over their bullet ridden bodies on TV? Who could take away our sons and husbands and daughters and wives and incarcerate them for as long as they wanted? Who could come here and kill them with impunity? Rape them? Torture them? Who could use billions to wage a war and yet still not tighten our belts or ask for across the board sacrifice but make a party out of it? We have and continue to do all of these things. Wake up America, the nightmare is unfolding and any profit, ANY in the despair of others will be shortlived. "For what would it profit a man to gain the whole world yet lose his soul?" Best to grab those in office now, find the '666' on their bodies and reveal them for the creatures that they are or accept that the hell we are creating right now is nothing compared for the one in store for us.

Have you ever noticed that people like to say that their idea of god which exists only in their heads does this or does that? They have absolutely no proof that this idea which exists in their heads can do anything. Might just as well say that god visited 9/11 on us because we elected George Bush and then when we reelected him, ignoring god, this imaginary god sent Katrina. Will the fundamentalists never get the message? Vote Democratic! God's trying to tell us that, isn't she? See how silly this claim that god does this or that can become? There ain't no god, never has been. It's all idle superstition carried over from primitives who didn't even know the world was round.
